IAB Romania and PwC announced the results regarding the online advertising market in Romania in 2008.
Notes regarding PwC report:
- est. 72,4 million RON – at a 3.6 medium RON/EUR rate in 2008 it means 20 mil EUR;
- almost +70% growth compared to the market in 2007;
- the beginning of crises meant a slower overall growth; -DELETED PARAGRAPHS regarding seasonality and spenders (official request) – INFO AVAILABLE TO BUY FROM IAB/PWC.
I really liked PwC’s gesture to applaud because:
- 20 million EUR meant a psychological step for the local Internet advertising market;
- Internet is the most dynamic medium in Romania with the highest growth in 2008.

The idea was to evaluate blogs as sources of competitive information, raw intelligence or OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) – the model was introduced by army intelligence when developing strategic intelligence models for early warnings, Cyber-Intelligence, C4I systems, War-Rooms, etc.
Well, the idea is that today information warfare is as important to business as it is to the military
I came back very optimistic regarding the online future in Romania after networking with marketing managers from FMCG, IT, Banking, Real Estate and Pharma. The trend is to invest more in online and approach integrated TV-online strategies.

[LATER EDIT: It is very important to note that this post is not about who was the first to use large banners - this is about INTRODUCING LARGE FORMATS FOR ALL THE ROMANIAN ONLINE INDUSTRY BY 2010 and LEADING THIS CHANGE; thanks Orlando, for your support]
A few months ago we promised to take the leadership and become a trend setter in Romanian online advertising. We endorse and we believe in large banner formats as the next step in online advertising.
NOTES on large online formats in Romania:
-15th of February 2009 – first meeting in INTACT Media Group regarding the introduction of large formats as a strategy for developing online advertising in Romania; Augustin Roman and Sorin Danilescu start to prepare GSP.ro for the new formats;
- 10th of March 2009 – 27 publishers with a reach of about 109 million unique visitors per month – that’s 66% of the total U.S. Internet audience – have agreed to try one of three new online ad formats sometime before July. The publishers are all members of the online publishers association (OPA);
We also expect other players to follow our trend and ARBOinteractive, ADevolution, Boom, Realitatea-Catavencu and InternetCorp to announce their plans to make this shift in order to have large banners as a standard in Romanian online advertising by 2010.
Mihai Trandafir, Managing Director Universal McCann, has a very interesting interview in Wall-Street.ro pointing out 2008 results and the challenges to face in 2009:
35% growth in 2008;
70 mil. eur turnover last year;
-15%/60 mil. estimate in 2009;
atypical spending behavior in Q1;
it’s going to be a tough year for small media agencies;
plans to unite Universal McCann and Initiative in Magna (part of Interpublic) – est. 100 mil EUR turnover;
Disinformation is something I’m used to read on Romanian blogs as tons of false or misinterpreted details are spread deliberately to influence decision makers, media clients or journalists.
I’ve made a habit not to trust specific blogs and during the last two weeks we focused on the best online package for football lovers in 2009.
A digital newspaper noticed yesterday that a blog campaign started two days ago had zero reactions. When starting a campaign on blogs, companies should know and track some key aspects when targeting Romanian blogosphere.
Here are some things from a presentation I’m working on, called “Brand Intelligence at work”:
Samsung LED TV – probably the best viral video until now with almost 8 million views on YouTube in the first two months. This is something you just can’t do on television
Doru is one of the best online trainers in Romania and I’m happy to see him so active in the last months, in a sustained effort to educate the online market.
Olimpiadele Comunicarii is a local competition for marcomm students and a perfect opportunity to meet new talents. This year I was invited to judge the blogs and untill the results will be public, I’ll give you some links connected with the spirit of the competition: Continue reading ‘Olimpiadele Comunicarii 2009′
One interesting thing I’ve noticed is that everybody has an open mind regarding the Internet (from Real Estate to Industrial products) and that there are business opportunities waiting to be exploited during the crisis.
Congratulations to Tudor Maxim and Mihai Nasaudean for the launch event they hosted yesterday and for all their efforts to provide quality networking for local business entrepreneurs.
During the crises, some companies decide to invest even more in online media.
CongratulationstoReckitt Benckiser for planning 5% of their media spendure for online campaigns (that’s 20 mil. usd). This decision is for the U.S. market but I’m waiting to see what is going to happen in Europe and in Romania.
Reckitt Benckiser owns brands like Cillit, Calgon, Vanish, Veet, Strepsils, Nurofen and Clearasil.
2008 business highlights.
- net revenues £6,563m (13% growth);
- £1,535m profit (15% growth).
And a quote from they’re annual report:
Our innovation has been crucial in giving consumers even more reason to buy our products.
