CareerBuilder – no.1 worldwide in online recruiting starts with a huge spam campaign in Romania

CareerBuilder.ro is their website and because of the e-mail addresses, my guess is that they bought the database from trafic.ro (Netbridge).

Last week I saw the new career section on eva.ro powered by CareerBuilder so I guess they signed a partnership with Netbridge. I’m not sure at this point what is it going to happen with myjob.ro since the crisis is also affecting this project.

I’m more than sure that I didn’t sign into trafic.ro to give my contacts (phone/e-mail) to third parties so I guess CareerBuilder is not doing a very good job by announcing their official launch with a big spam campaign.

LATER EDIT: Ionut Tudor, Business Intelligence Specialist at trafic.ro tells me that I was wrong about trafic.ro – Indeed CareerBuilder.ro had a spam campaign but trafic.ro didn’t ofered them the mailing database. I wonder who did?

Twitter community – the magical world

Romanian Twitter community is very small right now (less than 0,1% of overall twitter traffic comes from Romania) but this movie should be funny for them:

Weekend suggestions from TopGear.ro

  1. Bring your boat to a drift race and set the new record;
  2. Try something else on the road, the car is not enough :)
  3. Get your wings and fly around your neighbourhood.

And since it’s weekend, here’s one thing you can’t miss: ROMANIA vs. SERBIA, tonight from 20:45 only on Antena1.

PS: I hope ROMANIA will beat SERBIA, I know Antena1 will beat ProTV :)

Manipulation of blog research study worries advertisers

My unexpected love for research came when I first met Prof. Dan Petre – later on, Prof. Septimiu Chelcea made me see beyond the studies, samples, SPSS sheets.

I recently received a press release and I could easily identify classical manipulation techniques. This is probably why amateurs can scare away advertisers from blogs.

The press release was called “Majoritatea internauÅ£ilor români citesc zilnic între două ÅŸi cinci bloguri – studiu” (Most of Romanian Internet users read between two and five blogs on daily basis). The first technique, used from the title, was generalizing on the Romanian Internet users.

I stopped after reading the first paragraph on Mediafax:

“Majoritatea internauÅ£ilor români citesc zilnic între două ÅŸi cinci bloguri, numai 2,9% lecturând mai mult de 50, este rezultatul unui studiu de audienţă al blogurilor realizat pe cele mai vizitate 40 de bloguri româneÅŸti, informează un comunicat.”

Most of Romanian Internet users read between two and five blogs on daily basis – only 2,9% of them read more than 50 blogs – this is the result of a study regarding blog audiences made on the most visited 40 romanian blogs

Why is this a manipulation?

Researchers call it “representative sample” when making a study. This means that the population participating in the study has to be representative for the whole universe (in this case, the Romanian Internet Users).

The participants in the study were not random Romanian Internet Users since the study was made on the blogs. They were blog readers and of course, if you make a study on a people reading blogs they all are going to say that they indeed read blogs :) It’s obvious.

“The most visited 40 romanian blogs” are also not representative for all the Romanian Internet users and I’m afraid that their traffic cumulated is not even close to a medium .ro Internet website.

I don’t support amateurs doing complex socio-demographic researches and I don’t think that manipulating a study in such a manner can help anyone. It’s bad for the Romanian internet industry, it’s bad for the bloggers and it’s ridiculous.

Ridiculous because some people (self declared media analysts) wrote that the study shows that the audience reading blogs is better than the audience reading quality newspapers. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to laugh or to cry, but I’m pretty sure that Prof. Septimiu Chelcea would be pretty mad seeing how some people are an embarrassment for sociology.

I wrote this article because some of the people in the agencies were amused with the findings of the study and told me that we need much more time to see maturity on this market. The blogs present in the study are not even in BRAT/SATI, they are not audited nor participating in SATI’s audience research but they promise too many things they cannot deliver.

10 years of BRD – Groupe Société Générale – tactical 360 campaign

BRD – Groupe Société Générale is the second bank in terms of banking assets in Romania. They rank first of the financial entities listed at the Bucharest Stock Exchange and second of all the listed companies and this week they celebrated 10 years of doing business in Romania.

For this special event, they prepared the most impressive campaign of the year covering TV, Radio, Internet, Print and OOH. The main promoters of the campaign were Romanian all-time sport stars Nadia Comaneci, Gheorghe Hagi and Ilie Nastase.

Hagi

BRD – Groupe Société Générale is deeply anchored in the Romanian economy and the global community through more than 930 agencies and more than 1300 ATM. In December 2008, BRD counts 2,6 million active individuals and corporate customers and more than 2,3 million banking cards. BRD is also one of the most active companies using the Internet for promotional campaigns.

The campaign called “BRD – 10 years” generated lots of buzz and since the subject is still fresh, I wanted to look it up on google. I’m more than happy to say that for all the people looking for “BRD 10 ani” on Google, the first 3 results were Antena1.ro, GSP.ro and SFIN.ro:

Fake Mini viral campaign

Launched yesterday in UK:

Jurnalul.ro, new technology, innovative promotion

Jurnalul National (premium title, part of INTACT Media Group) is also doing heavy updates on the website. The new version of Jurnalul.ro is based on RUN technology (same as gsp.ro) and it’s aiming quite high.

The new offline campaign called Biblioteca pentru toti (A library for everybody) started to drive lots of interest from the public and the integrated campaign started a few weeks ago is very interesting.

For the first time in Romania, we implemented a special project and a very innovative online promotion of a product: we deliver audio spots for all the online streaming listeners of RomanticFM. The technology allows us to deliver the audio spot either at the beginning of the stream or to programm it on certain hours depending on the traffic and online audience. I hope that we’ll have a very interesting study case when the campaign will be finished.

Both Jurnalul.ro and the audio delivery technology behind RomanticFm.ro/RadioZu.ro are products available for online advertisers. On daily basis, there are over 50.000 people listening to online streams while surfing the Internet.

Using TV and online combined delivers up to 50% increase in positive brand perception

The latest research published by Brand Republic shows that using TV and online combined delivers up to 50% increase in positive brand perception.

The study shows also a significant increase in likelihood of purchase.

Key findings from the study:

• Using TV and online together results in 47% more positivity about a brand than using either in isolation
• The likelihood of buying or using a product increases by more than 50% when TV and online are used together
• 48% of the sample group watched broadcast TV while online (most days)
• Both TV and the internet are used for entertainment (TV, 80%; online 56%) and both have a significant influence on driving purchase (75% and 52%)
• The findings reinforce the need to  ensure creative synergy between TV and online advertising and identify best practice for better effectiveness, which requires more than simply putting TV ads online

Nokia 5800 Xpress Music online campaign

The Romanian landing page for the new Nokia 5800 phone is very inspired and fun – I found the new website quite interactive and although I’m not on target (or am I? :) ), made me spend at least 5 minutes playing with their flash.

You can check it out here.
